Enterprise change has become continuous. Technologies advance, markets shift, customer expectations develop, regulatory conditions change and strategic priorities evolve. Organisations respond through transformation, organisational agility, adaptive operating models and continuous improvement, each providing important mechanisms for adapting to changing conditions.
Transformation has a particularly important role when substantial enterprise change is required. Major shifts in strategy, technology, operating models or capability can demand concentrated investment, leadership attention and coordinated delivery. Transformation provides the focus and momentum required to achieve that change. The challenge arises when recurring transformation becomes the primary way the enterprise responds to an environment that is itself continually evolving.
Enterprise Portfolio Architecture introduces a different perspective. The enterprise requires an enduring capability to evolve continuously, with transformation operating as one mechanism within that continuing evolution. This allows significant transformation to occur when required without making temporary transformation structures the enterprise's default operating model for change.
The foundation is Enterprise Definition. Enterprise Intent establishes where the enterprise intends to go, while Enterprise Context represents the conditions within which that direction must continually be understood. As either changes, the enterprise can interpret what those changes mean for its existing Enterprise Demand and determine where enduring enterprise needs should evolve, remain stable or be newly established.
Enterprise Demand Objects provide continuity through that process. Positioned within enduring Enterprise Core Capability-aligned Portfolios, they allow changing enterprise needs to remain connected to the capabilities they influence as individual initiatives, programmes and transformations begin and conclude. Enterprise Core Capabilities can therefore continue evolving in response to Enterprise Demand without requiring the enterprise to reconstruct its planning environment around each new wave of change.
The Enterprise Portfolio Operating System (EPOS) provides the continual operating capability through which that evolution occurs. Enterprise Intent and Enterprise Context continue to inform Enterprise Demand; Enterprise Demand informs where Enterprise Core Capabilities need to evolve; investment and Delivery Responses can then be established as required. Transformation can form part of that response when the scale or nature of change warrants concentrated enterprise action.
This creates continuity before, during and after transformation. A major transformation can introduce substantial change, but the enterprise structures that established the need for that transformation remain. When the programme concludes, Enterprise Demand, Enterprise Core Capabilities and the wider Enterprise Portfolio continue to operate and evolve as conditions change again.
Continuous Enterprise Evolution therefore does not mean continuous transformation. It means maintaining the enterprise structures and operating capability required to continually understand what needs to evolve and respond coherently over time. Some evolution may require major transformation; other evolution may occur progressively through investment, operational improvement or smaller Delivery Responses.
For executive leaders, the opportunity is to build an enterprise that can absorb significant transformation when required while maintaining continuity beyond it. Transformation enables concentrated enterprise change. Continuous Enterprise Evolution enables the enterprise to keep evolving as the conditions around it continue to change.
